Photos by Jayme Aronson

J-Rock Publishing hosted a block party on Lexington Avenue on Saturday Aug. 16. The event started at 12 and ran into the night, highlighted by live musical performances by two of Boston╩╝s premier rappers O-RY-N and M-Dot. Other performers included Mayhem of EMS, Sir B, Shaymin, Boston's Finest, Mistress, Genevieve, Americo, Mark McLaughlin and the fine folk music of Billy Moschella Jr.

The community-building day also featured basketball activities, massive dodge ball games, over a thousand dollars in free prizes and giveaways from young adult author Jasen Sousa of J-Rock Publishing, food, local art, henna tattoos and caricatures. Save Our Somerville and The United Front Company sponsored the event and contributed to the positive energy. The United Front Company, which houses an artists community on 318 Squire Road in Revere, donated the musical equipment for the day and was responsible for the 10 musical acts which appeared throughout the day.

Henry Braun and Lee Starkey Porter Square Books 7:00 p.m.

Off the Grid Press

Henry Braun and Lee Starkey
Porter Square Books
7:00 p.m.

Henry Braun is the author of Loyalty and In the Virgil Woods, the latter published by Atheneum Press. Nathaniel Tarn says of Loyalty: “Wonderfully concise bringing together of wonder, closeness and immense distances!” Eleanor Wilner offers “Profound thanks to [this] mercurial poet who conjured “unimagined joy” in this “unprepossessing wilderness.” Loyalty won the 2008 Maine Literary Award for Poetry. Braun is a consulting editor for The American Poetry Review

Lee Sharkey’s third full-length book, A Darker Sweeter String, was a Small Press Review pick. Betsy Scholl writes of Sharkey’s new book: “If our dreams could edit the news (and sometimes our nightmares) these poems are how they’d wake us up to the urgency of our times, to the damage violence does to everyone—including those of us who observe from afar. The music played here is dark, but it is indeed sweet. It is what we need to hear. In Sharkey’s art solace and truth form a new alliance, and mourning becomes a gift.” Since 2003, Sharkey has been a co-editor of Beloit Poetry Journal.

Both poets are veteran anti-war activists, both are distinguished readers.

The Return of Dwyane Wade, USA Improves to 2-0 in Beijing

Back In A Flash!
How good is it to see D-Wade back to his old self? Slashing, flying and cutting up defenders like only he can. Before he went down with his injuries I thought D-Wade was the most exciting player to watch in the game, most feared he would never regain that acrobatic, fearless approach which made him one of the top players in the NBA and MVP of the 2006 Finals where he broke the hearts of all those annoying Maverick fans in Texas. D-Wade it’s great to see you back, it just wasn’t the same without you.
